I'm always hearing stories about people who make a living by trading stocks. I am sick of working all damn day and not making the kind of money I want. I would like to just make money in my underwear on my computer, buying and selling stocks.
Day trading

I have a friend that really trading stock for living. but bare in mind, trading is not the same as investing where you can still make money even when you asleep.

trading need a lot of commitment to continuously update with the market trend. it sometimes difficult for you to sleep well, thinking what tomorrow's market has to offer. if you can't take the heat, you'll can get distracted easily and lose focus on your own trading plan.

For those who have been using bmo investorline to trade stocks…if iw ant to day trade or swing trade..and when i sell a stock when will the money tht i make trading be in my investor line account sot hat i can start doing another trade?

I do the occasional day trade in my td waterhouse account. I keep enough cash in the account to cover my trades, so they don't have a problem with the day trades.
My firm are beginning to make use of technical analysis for trading purposes, and the MACD is one of them. The thing is, the default exponential moving averages (EMA) are 12- and 26-day, which doesn't work for all the stocks I cover. My main questions are, why are 12- and 26-days the defaults, and also, how do you decide which trading day EMA to use when the defaults don't work for a particular stock?

Thanks!!

Hey people,

I haven't touched stocks in maybe 10 years and I want to get into day trading sometime soon. I want to start off slow and low to get the hang of things and I was wondering if anyone has recommendations or tips for how/where to start? Preferably a place with low commission of course, I remember that much at least : P

Links would help the most. All tips and advice are appreciated!

Sincerely,
Jason H.

Some of the major trading websites offers initial 30 day or first 20 trades free….you can choose them and see how the service with them goes….I am sure you will find one of them better…good luck :)
Is there a website that I can learn from?

The others advice is pretty good, but with the day trading, you shouldn’t day trade unless you have a few million in the market. Most of the people that day trade for a living; they are on leverage up to 1000 to one. So every dollar they “personally” have in the market, the company they work for gives them 999 dollars to trade. Then in turn take a percent of any profit, and if the person loses any of the money, they will need to pay it back. The reason you need so much money is because they “make there own market” in stock. What I mean is, they have so much money in a stock, they can change the price of it by a penny or two when they trade. A penny or two, over 1000’s of shares, many times a day….adds up very fast, and that is how they make money.
I want to find some stocks that move within a confined stable range, so that I can trade the same stock over and over again–buying at their lows and selling at their highs. It doesn't matter if the stock moves just a few cents. I'll be buying between $25,000 – $50,000 of the stock at a time (maybe even more).

PG is a great one to trade through any length of time, daily or just hold on to it.
Can anybody let me know which are the best indicators for daytrading. pl. tell in detail like how many minits charts should i keep and in that chart which indicators should be kept with what parameters for day trading.
Day trading

The best technical indicators for daytrading depends onour comfort level on which one to use. Any of these indicators (oversold, overbought) and trend indicators (higher high, higher low) should help. How many charts depends on what timeframe you plan to trade. You would usually need at least 4 charts. An hourly chart, 15 minutes chart, 5 minutes chart, and 2-3 minutes chart. 5 minutes chart is most traders use for entry/exit intraday, you could make at least two good trades with 5 minutes chart on fast moving stocks.

JessicaM has a very nice summary on Market Profile, you might want to a look at the market profile approach on daytrading.

I need over 10k to day trade options and stocks and need extra capital to make more money, will a bank loan me money for this purpose?
Day trading

No. A bank will not, as you need something to legal tie the funds too…even with a signature loan, you need to explain the reason for the loan (this is to prevent money laundering). Your only option in this case is a Margin Account through your broker. But since you trade options, you would already have a margin account, which means you know you do need to maintain equity in the account.
There is an alternative. BUT, I wouldn't recommend it.
You could engage in a Carry Trade. Again!! I do not recommend you do this for Day-Trading options or stocks!
You short a currency (the JPY is pretty popular). Just like shorting a stock, you get a credit. Since Forex is not regulated by the same Margin Rules as Equities, you can get 50K for a simply $500 account. With that credit, rather than buying Bonds with a higher interest rate than the rate of the shorted currency (Fed rate is 4.25, so you could get a bond around that rate, which JPY rate is .5%..you profit from the difference) you put that money into your options account. You need to be careful that you leave some room in your Forex account, as you do not want a Margin Call on this. And you need to make sure you monitor the currency market to make sure that the JPY's flat…although if it is dropping, you have the added bonus of making money there too.

I am not suggesting you do this, but just saying that there are possibilities out there. Just don't use this one, as it you need to be aware of what you are doing.

I am a finance student and have experience trading stocks and forex casually for fun, but would like to pick one to spend more time trading… Has anyone had success with either one? I know the obviouse pro's and cons of both, but I am probably overlooking some major ones… Does anyone know which one would be better for sitting in and trading a few days a week?

Check the website below and have a look may be it will help you more in deciding.

I am trading stocks (swing trading). I am using AmeriTrade, and I am using technical analysis to trade. When I loose money it's mostly becuase the whole market is down (caused by some bad news, etc). I realize now that I need to be watching the news more aggresively. I might decide to get out before any major news hit.
How can I get info about major "upcoming" economic news. Like govermnet reportings, and the like (in one single place). It seems like every other day there is some news poping up. Which web site is the best, in your opinion, in reporting this kind of stuff? Thanks

Stops aren't working? are they in the right places?
and you're not hedged with options, I take it.

you can have multiple such sites open in multiple browser tabs or multiple browsers.

look for the upcoming news/events list in places such as
