I am a day trader and i usually pick a stock from the cnbc.com watchlist and see if their signs of profit that day and i have been pretty good with it and i am making profit. but i want to know what other day traders are doing and and how they chose stocks for day trading. as a day trader what should i do to get better at it.
Day trading

As a general rule… I'd stay away from CNBC for stock picks.

If you're not using "technical analysis" for day trading, what you're doing is not maximizing your trades. You should be scanning for opportunities based on your technical criteria.
Money Management and position sizing are job #1.

Reading at least one book every six weeks is another must.
Two of my favorites (to start) are;
Trading In The Zone, Mark Douglas
Mastering The Trade, John Carter

I trade a couple of stocks right now(CSCO, SNDK, HANS) but i wanted to know if anyone had any picks that they would like to share with me? I usually try and stick to the Nasdaq listed stocks but im curious if people day trade a lot of NYSE stocks.

thanks,

I'm guessing you have not been trading that long. Day trading is easy when the market keeps going up. The market is due for a minor correction and you will probably lose most of your money.
Day trading

You can make money and you can lose money. You need to do a lot of research. You have to work really hard to stay ahead of the market. It is not easy. You might want to see what the best traders are buying and selling at http://www.top10traders.com – this is a free site that lets you create a portfolio of stocks with $100,000 in "play" money. Each day the site ranks the best performing portfolios, so you can see how your picks perform compared to other investors. You can read posts on investing from the best traders, as well as share your own investing ideas. There is a charting feature, so you can see how your portfolio performs compared to the S&P 500. Also, you can create your own "group" so that you can see how you are doing compared to your friends.

Good luck.

I would like to buy some stocks, but I want to do it in a cost effective and flexible way. I have been looking at Scottrade and E-Trade, but I wanted to ask people with experience. I would like to purchase stocks online. Also, I am puzzled by the saving's account that acts as an intermediary between my bank account and my investment portfolio. Are there firms that eliminate this "middleman" approach, but still provide a flexible (quick) way to purchase/sell stock. I don't plan to do day trading… most likely periodic investments (long term), though I want to make sure if I want to but a stock, I can do so quickly. Should I be looking at some other investment firms I am not aware of? Your insight is appreciated, I don't want to start out with the wrong firm.

I think the best way to invest is to open an account at Scottrade.com – they offer $7 online trades. To find great investment ideas, see what the best investors are buying and selling. Once you are comfortable investing with "play" money, you can slowly start investing the real stuff.

Good luck.

Day trading

I think the best way to day trade is to just focus on a few stocks. Read everything you can about the stocks. Watch the price movements of the stocks for a few months, at least. Then you slowly get an idea of when the stock is oversold or overbought.

I would think you would need $10,000 minimum. You pay a lot of commissions when you trade alot. Scottrade is a good place to open an online account.

I'm not interested in day trading, I want stocks that I can buy and hold onto for a long time. Are there any sites where I can get advice on which stocks to buy?

Try this: go to any financial site…put the symbols of some rock solid Mutual Funds in the quote box…then click on " holdings"… compare lists… see a few repeats?…there you go!
Check FCNTX…FAIRX…MXXIX…JAVLX..WWNPX
Sites ? http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor
Go to " stock scouter" and look for a link to " top 50"…
