Am I the worst trader in the world?
Does anyone else keeping finding themselves on the wrong side of the market all the time?

Can anyone give me some constructive (not give up) and practical advise on this to help get my confidence back?

Thanks

Day trading

You need to take into account that a day trade that has
made a good profit can go into the floor broker‘s or
desk trader‘s pocket. This is possible as he can leave
buyer/seller‘s name in blank and only fill it in when
reported or taken from the runner (the boy that picks up
the slips from the floor). In some markets this is not
possible since the whole deal (except the shouting) is
immediately recorded. But when trading is wild, a fast
light is put on, which allows 15 minutes to conclusion
instead of only five. I could give you many examples
but this is sufficient to convince you to change both
your trading house and/or floor broker or, better still
both. Find a floor broker that you know and trust, this
is the only solution. It is almost impossible to always
be the loser, so think twice and change your servers.

You might want to take a look at http://www.top10traders.com – this is a free site that lets you create a portfolio of stocks with $100,000 in "play" money. Each day the site ranks the best performing portfolios, so you can see how your picks perform compared to other investors. You can read posts on investing from the best traders, as well as share your own investing ideas. There is a charting feature, so you can see how your portfolio performs compared to the S&P 500. Also, you can create your own "group" so that you can see how you are doing compared to your friends.

How do you pick a stock that will be bull if your in a bear market? is day trading made tougher by a recession or is it still just as risky when its a bull market?
Day trading

When stock prices are depressed, there are more opportunities to buy shares of good companies where the share price is a good value. For example, during the worst of the dot.com meltdown, eBay and Amazon.com were 'on sale' because of investor over-reaction. In general, with lower prices there is less down-side, hence lower risk.

Day trading is always risky. In bear market, you have the additional risk of chasing down a stock, which can wipe you out pretty well.

Consider finding a few mutual funds that have good track records in bull and bear markets. If you consistently make better stock picks than the best mutual fund managers at the equivalent level of portfolio risk, then you should go be a mutual fund manager — the best are highly compensated. If not, picking high quality funds and investing very consistently (buying steadily regardless of whether the market is up, down and sideways) gives you benefits of lower average cost of fund shares.

Day trading

The key to day trading successfully is to pick a single stock, that has some volatility, and then learn everything about the stock. Watch it for a few months, and get a feel for the stocks price movements. I have had some success trading ADDL.ob, but any volatile stock can be daytraded.

The most successful investor of all time warren buffet uses the buy and hold forever strategy. He picks stock that are of quality names like coke, gillete and so forth. waits till the price on the company is attractive and buys it. This strategy is also very advantagous tax wise too as any capital gains on stocks held less than a year are taxed at a regualar income rate. Long term capital gains are taxed at lower rates. Plus you are taxed on your capital gains when you sell your shares so if you are buying shares and selling them then buying new ones right away then you will have to use other sources of income to pay your taxes unless you are trading in an ira so I would not reccomend active trading unless you are doing so in an ira.

Long term investing is not gambling!

Warren buffet own his own company and you can invest in it berkshire hathaway ticker symbol brkb or brka

I would say a mix of strategies might be best. The best thing to do is – do a lot of research. A good place to find interesting investment ideas is http://www.top10traders.com – this is a free site that lets you create a portfolio of stocks with $100,000 in "play" money. Good luck.

I have been developing a trading strategy for the last 6 months. As of today, 11-12-08, the average winning trade percentage is 92% and of those winning trades, the average gain is 5.97% between 1-5 days. If this strategy were used over the course of a year, an individual's portfolio would more than triple. I am going to start a website in the upcoming few months to have people subscribe to my picks. I do not know what to charge. Ideas?

You may want to look at Collective2:

http://www.collective2.com

People can subscribe to your system there and you have a number of ways you can charge. One advantage of using them is that you have an independent auditor of your results. Another is that they do all of the billing for you.

Unfortunately, not free.

But even if you decide not to use them, you can still get some idea of what other people are charging for their methods — while seeing what kinds of results they are generating for those charges.

P.S. I hope by "developing a trading strategy for the last 6 months", you don't mean you've been tweaking historical data to generate those results. There have been a few systems on Collective2 that looked great in their presentation of backtest results, but failed miserably going forward.

I'm interested in day trading..where can i get information on technicals and maybe trading picks??

Day trading

You need to get educated about business. Most day-traders lose to the market over time.

While day trading is neither illegal nor is it unethical, it can be highly risky. Most individual investors do not have the wealth, the time, or the temperament to make money and to sustain the devastating losses that day trading can bring.

Here are some of the facts that every investor should know about day trading:

Be prepared to suffer severe financial losses

Day traders typically suffer severe financial losses in their first months of trading, and many never graduate to profit-making status. Given these outcomes, it's clear: day traders should only risk money they can afford to lose. They should never use money they will need for daily living expenses, retirement, take out a second mortgage, or use their student loan money for day trading.

Day traders do not "invest"

Day traders sit in front of computer screens and look for a stock that is either moving up or down in value. They want to ride the momentum of the stock and get out of the stock before it changes course. They do not know for certain how the stock will move, they are hoping that it will move in one direction, either up or down in value. True day traders do not own any stocks overnight because of the extreme risk that prices will change radically from one day to the next, leading to large losses.

Day trading is an extremely stressful and expensive full-time job

Day traders must watch the market continuously during the day at their computer terminals. It's extremely difficult and demands great concentration to watch dozens of ticker quotes and price fluctuations to spot market trends. Day traders also have high expenses, paying their firms large amounts in commissions, for training, and for computers. Any day trader should know up front how much they need to make to cover expenses and break even.

Day traders depend heavily on borrowing money or buying stocks on margin

Borrowing money to trade in stocks is always a risky business. Day trading strategies demand using the leverage of borrowed money to make profits. This is why many day traders lose all their money and may end up in debt as well. Day traders should understand how margin works, how much time they'll have to meet a margin call, and the potential for getting in over their heads.

Don't believe claims of easy profits

Don't believe advertising claims that promise quick and sure profits from day trading. Before you start trading with a firm, make sure you know how many clients have lost money and how many have made profits. If the firm does not know, or will not tell you, think twice about the risks you take in the face of ignorance.

Watch out for "hot tips" and "expert advice" from newsletters and websites catering to day traders

Some websites have sought to profit from day traders by offering them hot tips and stock picks for a fee. Once again, don't believe any claims that trumpet the easy profits of day trading. Check out these sources thoroughly and ask them if they have been paid to make their recommendations.

Remember that "educational" seminars, classes, and books about day trading may not be objective

Find out whether a seminar speaker, an instructor teaching a class, or an author of a publication about day trading stands to profit if you start day trading.

Check out day trading firms with your state securities regulator

Like all broker-dealers, day trading firms must register with the SEC and the states in which they do business. Confirm registration by calling your state securities regulator and at the same time ask if the firm has a record of problems with regulators or their customers. You can find the telephone number for your state securities regulator in the government section of your phone book or by calling the North American Securities Administrators Association at (202) 737-0900. NASAA also provides this information on its website at www.nasaa.org/QuickLinks/ContactYourRegulator.cfm.

Instead, read the Intelligent Investor and follow Warren Buffett. Get a great job and invest the proceeds wisely.
