Hi

I am looking for the best stock charting software for Day trading, I have used yahoo, stockcharts.com, bigcharts.com and etrade pro. There are others out there, can anyone reccommend one over others and why is it better than others, price, ease of use, capacity features?

Any relevant comments or advice appreciated.

For the price, you can't beat Telechart. It has everything you'll need in one place. Speed and efficiency is unsurpassed. You can sort thru 8000 stocks in seconds to find any criteria (and I mean ANY criteria) you can think of. If it's not a function of TC, then you can easily write your own personal criteria formula.

Each function key on your keyboard can represent 12 different chart configurations, so you can look at these 12 different criteria in seconds. As soon as you hit the "F" key, the chart is displayed on your screen.

Did I mention that it has all the industry groups? If you looking at a stock and you want to know how the industry is doing, just switch over to the industry group with a click of the mouse.

All the indicies are also grouped together. You can also download that group of stocks that meet your criteria into a CSV file for importing to XL. I especially like this feature.

The support you get from the Wordens is unsurpassed also, and I couldn't get by my day without reading the daily wisdom from Peter or Don.

I popular methods are to use the full stocastic, RSI, and MACD. These methods essentually tend to show when a stock is over bought and over sold. I can not go into all the details of how to use them here, but I will provide you with a link where you can learn about them.

http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school:technical_indicators_and_overlays:moving_average_convergence_divergence_macd

My firm are beginning to make use of technical analysis for trading purposes, and the MACD is one of them. The thing is, the default exponential moving averages (EMA) are 12- and 26-day, which doesn't work for all the stocks I cover. My main questions are, why are 12- and 26-days the defaults, and also, how do you decide which trading day EMA to use when the defaults don't work for a particular stock?

Thanks!!

Can anybody let me know which are the best indicators for daytrading. pl. tell in detail like how many minits charts should i keep and in that chart which indicators should be kept with what parameters for day trading.
Day trading

The best technical indicators for daytrading depends onour comfort level on which one to use. Any of these indicators (oversold, overbought) and trend indicators (higher high, higher low) should help. How many charts depends on what timeframe you plan to trade. You would usually need at least 4 charts. An hourly chart, 15 minutes chart, 5 minutes chart, and 2-3 minutes chart. 5 minutes chart is most traders use for entry/exit intraday, you could make at least two good trades with 5 minutes chart on fast moving stocks.

JessicaM has a very nice summary on Market Profile, you might want to a look at the market profile approach on daytrading.

I am trying to draw charts to find their trading range. What is the difference in using 6mo, 1 yr or even a 5 day chart? How do I actually draw to find the range? Thanks!
Day trading

To draw the range, you need to connect the highs togeter to find level of resistance and then lows to find level of support.

This range between level of resistance and level of support is the trading range.

The idea of using differnt duration charts to find the direction of market in long term and shotrt term. So, if the long term chart is pointing upward, enter the trade when shorter term chart is also pointing upward.

P.S. I live in Canada

There's a special address for Canadians, https://www.thinkorswimcanada.com/.

Simply the best for swing trading stocks and options. There's even an audio program all day (9:15-11:30AM & 1:30-4:00PM, EST) . The program also answers questions on specific technical questions (on specific stocks) & there's a video/chart which you can see the "ShadowTrader" actually show what he's referring to.

The platform is great (really great!!!). Charts are great (both TOS and Profet). Service is great.

They have many conditional order types including;
Blast 6
One Cancells Other (great for putting in a stop and limit price at the same time).
1st Triggers next
Chose by time & date execution.
Market Close
and many more

There graphs art great. Service is great. You'll be amazed. This platform was rated #1 by Barron's in their March 2007 best online broker article ((for software based brokers).
They were an incredible hit in Las vegas at the TradersExpo this past November. More people were checking them out more than any other broker.

I've been with them since April 2007.
(I have used Schwab (active trader program), Ameritrade, Scottrade and Fidelity).

The only thing they lack is "BackTesting" and that's coming out in this month.

Other ideas for good platforms;
TradeStation (good charting, backtesting + much more)
Iinteractive Brokers (fair charting, over 40 order types).

Got any web sites that can assist me? thanks!

For technical analysis the sites are
stockcharts.com
stockta.com

earnings.com (great during earnings season)

I guess I should have worded it differently. I already trade ameritrade. I use a newer dell with a 19in LCD. I am interested in upgrading to a multi-LCD/ multi-video card setup to follow more charts at once. Does anyone have a multi monitor setup?

You will need a computer that is quick you will also need a highspeed internet connection and most importantly you will need level 2 charts that are not delayed that are up to the minute tick for tick with the market, which you will probably have to pay a subscription for. Most charts on the internet are delayed. If you don't know how to day trade you will need to learn how which I am assuming you don't understand the true concept of day trading most people don't they think it is based on volatility and momentum which couldn't be further from the truth. It is based on mocking the specialists and getting inbetween the bid ask spreads which have become very tight in todays markets. so educate yourself before you start.
I'd like to be able to identify the daily trading patterns for some stocks. I know many sites provide charts that cover the span of days, weeks, months, etc. But I'd actually like to see the day chart for each of the past few days, or weeks, side by side so I can see patterns. Thanks in advance.
